Abstract

Arrays of magnetic probes in conjunction with numerical and analytical modeling have been used to study the equilibrium states of magnetized toroidal plasma configurations called spheromaks. A time resolved fit of data to models shows the effects of pressure and current forces in determining the equilibrium, and shows evolution of the state over time. Results indicate a reliable equilibration to It minimum energy state across a range of plasma parameters. Other states are also observed under certain conditions.
