Abstract

The relatively new series "Understanding Contemporary European and Latin American Literature" seeks to offer its readers a concise introduction to the life and principal works of major contemporary authors. McNerney's book is the first study in the series on a contemporary Spanish American author. Her approach to the writings of Colombia's Nobel laureate is sociohistorical in nature and underscores the close relationship between the content of Garcia Marquez's texts and the society in which they were written. This is a very useful book for the nonspecialist, for it provides a clear explication and overview not only of the writer's principal works of fiction but also of his journalistic essays. An excellent selected bibliography is also included. Appropriate for college, secondary school, and public libraries.
