Abstract

Hensleigh’s thesis explores the working lives of British merchant sailors in the 17th and 18th centuries based primarily on the diaries of Ned Coxere, Edward Barlow, John Cremer, Nathanial Uring, and Oloudah Equiano. The author concludes that while seamen faced difficult and dangerous natural and human environments, these “Jack Tars” had a proud and self-reliant sailor identity.
