Abstract

A thorough analysis of publications of the Pequot Times from 1996 to 2001 found creative tribal responses to local white backlash. The responses can be categorized as responding to four narratives of backlash that were repeatedly used in attempts to discredit the Pequots’ success. Each of these narratives have historical precedents in strikingly similar criticisms targeting the African American community: fear of growing regional influence, safety concerns, comparison to other marginalized racial groups, and the questioning of authenticity.
