Abstract

Ubelaker-Andrade examines the cultural and political impact of Selecciones del Reader’s Digest in Buenos Aires, Argentina between 1940 and 1959. This thesis analyzes the intended Good Neighbor propaganda put into Selecciones by American writers, illustrators, and editors, but also the magazine’s interpretation in Buenos Aires as evident through interviews. Ubelaker-Andrade uses Selecciones itself, other periodicals, contemporary books, and secondary sources to present her argument. The vast popularity of the magazine allowed it to reach wide audiences and weave together transnational messages with the local meaning its readers brought to it.
