Abstract

Jill Norgren, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, CUNY, will give a brief sampling from her website project, “Her Hat Was in the Ring” (www.herhatwasinthering.org), focusing on the New York women who did not wait for woman suffrage to run for office before 1917. The “HerHat” team has identified more than 3,000 women candidates for elective office in the United States from the late 19th century through 1920, and has included biographical information, campaign information, images, and selected resources. This Berks presentation will provide a brief sketch of the 159 women who, in both partisan and non-partisan campaigns, sought elective office in New York State from the 1870s to 1917. It will also compare patterns of New York women’s campaigning and election with other states where woman suffrage was granted before the ratification in 1920 of the Nineteenth Amendment.
