Abstract
This chapter discusses the role of centers for engagement at institutions of higher education as a facilitator, container, or resource for relationships between people situated within academic institutions and people situated in communities who partner with them. It explores the ways communities of care built among people offer a sustainable alternative way to ground engaged work when compared to the precarity of institutional interest, funding priorities, and employment status often associated with higher education, and by proxy, their centers for engagement. These centers often play an important role in supporting the work done in collaboration with communities, but they cannot replace or eclipse authentic relationships among people. While these centers’ can facilitate substantial efforts for positive change, the goal of maintaining their status within the institution cannot replace or eclipse the goal of liberation.
