Abstract
Clifford Geertz was one of the most influential US anthropologists of the twentieth century and a driving force behind the interpretive turn in anthropology. His work made the concepts of culture, symbol, interpretation, and thick description central to ethnography and anthropological writing. He is a key figure in symbolic and interpretive anthropology and his work has also been influential in other fields, such as sociology, political science, history, psychology, and religious studies.
