Abstract
This is a competent and highly readable digest of existing scientific literature on deceit and self-deception. Ford dutifully treats theory and research from biological, psychological, and social standpoints. Additional chapters focus on pathological lying, false memories, the detection of deceit, and appropriate therapy. Although effectively synthesizing a substantial literature on the topic, new insights into the issues are not developed. The volume also avoids all the conceptual problems that haunt the domain, for example, in determining what is a true as opposed to a false account, and how self-deception is possible. The book is similarly cleansed of all ethical complications. General; undergraduate.
