Abstract
The reviewer states that this book (see record 1994-98764-000 ) offers a treatment model that is notable not only for its painstaking thoroughness and sensitivity but also for its avoidance of dogmatism and rigid formulations. This book opens with a set of chapters devoted to an in-depth consideration of culture; the issues adumbrated in these chapters are revisited in the subsequent chapters on the dynamics of women's eating and the explication of the treatment model. Thus the structure of the book echoes its central premise: Women's private struggles with eating are inextricably embedded in public culture. In conclusion, is an important and challenging addition to the burgeoning literature on women's eating problems and to psychoanalytic studies of gendered psychic life.
