Abstract
In modern consciousness the achievements and promise of science loom large. So too do the expanded human powers to exercise control (in technology) that have been unleashed by scientific developments. While, for some, science and new technologies induce fear and apprehension, for the most part in the contemporary world their value has been deeply internalized.
