Abstract

Photographer Miller's splendid coffee-table book features 130 pages of excellent photographs of birds found along the Gulf Coast of North America. The layout and printing are unusually good. It would make a pleasing and decorative addition to libraries in the Gulf States or those with an interest in ornithology. Its use as a reference is much more limited; the ten pages of text by William R. Fontenot (Lafayette Natural History Museum, Louisiana) are limited in scope, and there are no references. There is an index relating primarily to the photographs. Before adding this book to their collections, academic libraries should have one or more good field guides and a basic ornithology textbook such as F. Gill's Ornithology (2nd ed., 1995). This work will interest readers of all ages, high school students and up.
