Abstract

This handbook offers a detailed practical introduction to methods for observing, censusing, trapping, and autopsying birds in the wild. Sutherland (Univ. of East Anglia), Newton (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Cambridgeshire), and Green (Univ. of Cambridge) also provide sections on analyses of the resulting data and management of both game and nongame birds. A symposium volume, each chapter has (a) different author(s). Graduate and professional libraries will be the primary users, especially via investigators who are new to a field or beginning to plan a research project. For a more comprehensive discussion of specific techniques, the investigator will have to turn to specialty journals. The coverage in this book is uneven; some topics are covered exhaustively in more than one chapter, whereas other techniques, such as radar ornithology, receive only a paragraph. The material is not suitable for the general reader because of the technical writing and because most of the techniques require government permits to be performed legally. The book is nicely produced with several useful black-and-white halftone photographs, graphs, and drawings. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students and above.
