Celebrated Polish theater director Krystian Lupa is currently working on an homage to Andy Warhol and his cohorts, entitled Factory 2. Due to premiere in Kraków's Stary Teatr in December 2007, the play shows the making of a film that Warhol never produced, and will invoke such unconventional figures as the drag queens Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis and the artist Jack Smith. Currently, homophobia is the new anti-Semitism for the demagogues of Poland's right-wing parties, and in this context Lupa's agenda is alchemical rather that hagiographical: He is aiming to create his own living Polish theatrical analogue to the ephemeral countercultural collective that Warhol first assembled and catalyzed in the United States more than 40 years ago. In an interview, Lupa discusses his work on the play.
